Center Services

•You need a job, but you don’t have a resume, or a computer to make one.
•You have a resume but you think it could be improved.
•You have the ideal resume but don’t know what local businesses are hiring.
You are new to the work force.
You are on Social Assistance and you are finding the job hunt a frustrating exercise.
You are not sure what type of career you are suited for.
You would like to go back to school and would like to explore your options.
You would like to see if there is funding available for becoming self-employed.
You would like some career counselling to change occupations.

We are here to help you solve these problems!

The Career Development Centre has been in operation on Haida Gwaii since March 1997 and has been administered by Haida Gwaii Community Futures since 2001.  Operating funding was previously received from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada but is now administered by the Employment and Labour Services Division of the provincial Ministry of Housing and Social Development.

Our Center provides career counseling and employment assistance services to all unemployed Canadians.  We can refer eligible clients for training, funding, and other programs.

The Career Development Centre also hosts a research library of calendars for Canada wide post-secondary institutions as well as internet access for researching either education or employment initiatives.

Some of the services that the Career Development Centre offers can be assessed on a self-serve basis, some can be handled during an unscheduled drop-in visit, and others, such as career counselling and testing require an appointment with one of the staff. A phone call to the office beforehand will help to determine which options will best serve you.

You do not need to make an appointment to use the Resource Room if you need to access a computer for career related purposes such as EI applications, searching on-line job banks, and any such activities that you can do without staff assistance. You may also peruse the many resource books, publications and school calendars available at any time during open hours. You can drop in at any time to briefly discuss your goals and have staff verify your requirements.

Appointments are usually necessary if you will need assistance to design a resume or write a cover letter. You will also need an appointment if you are seeking career or educational counselling or want to complete vocational testing. Appointments to discuss your career goals are usually scheduled in either half-hour or full hour blocks, depending on the extent of your questions. More than one appointment may be necessary if you want to do in-depth career planning or personality or aptitude testing.
